How To Become A Certified Security Officer?

When times are difficult, individuals have a tendency to turn to dishonest tactics to achieve what they want. This can lead to an increase in crimes such as theft and burglary. As a result, there is a continuing need for people to work in the security guard industry. In point of fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the United States Department of Labor projects that the number of jobs available for security guards will increase by 14 percent between the years 2008 and 2018, which is a rate that is faster than the average for all occupations.

There is a demand for security guards in a variety of settings, including retail malls, hospitals, commercial complexes, and colleges, to name a few of these environments. The question now is, how does one go about getting their security guard license?

To begin, you will need to submit an application for a license in the state in which you now reside. There are certain licensing standards that must be met in each state, and these requirements vary from state to state. To get started, locate the government department in your country that is in charge of issuing licenses to security guards. They will be able to provide you with information on the precise criteria for obtaining a license.

After that, examine your educational background to guarantee that you meet the prerequisites. For security guard licensure, high school graduation or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required in almost all jurisdictions; however, certain states may demand a higher degree depending on whether or not you intend to run your own security firm.

If you have the required education, the next step is to submit to a rigorous background check and a drug screening conducted by the Department of Justice in your state and the FBI. Be ready to share this information if you have ever been convicted of a crime that has since been expunged from your record.

The training on emergency procedures, property rights, and the custody of suspects is something that you are required to go through after successfully passing the background check and the drug test. In certain areas, such as New York and California, it is mandatory for security guards to complete training that has been approved by the state. Because some jurisdictions permit training to be completed at a third-party training center, you will need to research the prerequisites for the state in which you intend to get licensed. To carry tear gas or a baton while on duty is prohibited in some places and requires special permission in addition to training.

After you have satisfied the standards outlined above, you will need to complete the formal licensure application through the state where you live. You will also be given a fingerprint card, which must be submitted to a fingerprinting facility that has been approved by the relevant agency in order to have your fingerprints recorded.

You may anticipate an annual salary of anything from $19,150 to $30,100* if you work as a security guard. This variable is determined by a number of factors, including the industry in which you are employed (guards working in medical and surgical hospitals earn approximately $29,020 annually, whereas guards working in investigation and security services earn $22,170), as well as whether or not you are licensed and certified to carry a weapon. Due to the additional training required and the increased level of responsibility that comes along with carrying or utilizing a weapon, armed security guards earn more money than unarmed security guards.
