How Much Does It Cost to Hire A Security Guard?

James HawesJanuary 15, 2022,

Depending on your demands, employing a security guard might cost anywhere from $15 to over $100 per hour. For example, if you require a guard to watch a retail business for potential shoplifters, the cost will be lower. In comparison, if you're a high-ranking CEO who needs full-time, exclusive security, it may cost you up to $1500 each day.

Aside from that, the cost of hiring security guards is determined by various criteria, including the number of guards needed, the level of risk in the region, the guard's expertise, and whether they are armed. Another factor that affects the pricing is whether they are on your payroll as a full-time employee or are hired on a contract basis.

Although the costs of employing these people vary, and estimating how much you'll have to spend might be difficult, here are some of the aspects that can influence their pricing to help you get a better sense.

Armed vs. Unarmed

Armed guards are more expensive than unarmed guards, costing $5 to $10 per hour. This is due to the high demand for armed protection, the high expense of obtaining or keeping weaponry permits, and the extensive training these individuals get. Hiring a combination of armed and unarmed guards is the most cost-effective choice.

Another aspect that influences the price is the level of training that the employees have received. For example, off-duty police officers who want to supplement their income can charge a minimum of $40 to $60.

In addition to active officers, some guards are former law enforcement or military personnel who have accumulated a wealth of training expertise over the years, making them exceptionally equipped.

When it comes to hiring a security guard, experience is one of the most important elements to consider. Whether you hire a security company or a guard on your own, an experienced guard with advanced expertise can cost between $35 and $50 per hour.

Time and Location

When you require a guard may have an impact on the price. For example, if you hire armed or unarmed guards for after-hours parties, you may expect to pay anything from $30 to $50 per hour.

While the cost of hiring a security guard varies by geography, for example, hiring a security guard in most simple small towns in the United States' midwestern region is more likely to be less expensive than hiring a security guard in a booming coastal metropolis.

So you'll have to pay for training, taxes, insurance, other benefits, and uniforms if you hire a security guard on your own. If you employ a guard through a security agency, you simply pay for the services; the company pays for all other benefits.
