BG Lyons' military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, Combined Arms & Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College, the National Defense University’s Reserve Component National Security Course, the Joint Task Force Commander’s Course, the U.S. Army War College and the Joint and Combined Warfighting School.
BG Lyons enlisted as a Private First Class into the Nebraska Army National Guard on March 20th, 1980 as a member of Detachment 1, Co C, 1-134th Infantry Battalion in Omaha.
BG Lyons was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on May 22nd, 1983 at the Nebraska National Guard Military Academy and has had the following assignments: Battalion Assistant S-3 and Antiarmor Platoon Leader in the 1-134th Infantry Battalion, Armor Platoon Leader in Co D, 1-195th Armor Battalion, Battalion Support Platoon Leader in the 1-134th Infantry Task Force, Company Executive Officer and Company Commander of Co D, 1-195th Armor Battalion, as well as Battalion C-E Officer and S-2 of the 2-134th Infantry Task Force. His Active Guard and Reserve career assignments include: Operations & Training Officer for the Nebraska Military Academy, S-3 for the 92d Troop Command, Executive Officer for the 1-167th Cavalry Squadron, State Mobilization Readiness Officer, State Recruiting and Retention Manager, Executive Officer for the 92d Troop Command, JFHQ J1, Commander of the Training Site Command, and the JFHQ J3. BG Lyons deployed to Afghanistan 1 November 2006 to 1 June 2007 and commanded the 209th Regional Corps Advisory Command / Regional Security Assistance Command-North, responsible for training and mentoring the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police, as part of Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix V.
Prior to his current assignment, General Lyons served as the Commander, 92nd Troop Command with additional duties as the Chief Joint Staff for the Nebraska National Guard.
BG Lyons’ military awards include: the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and numerous other awards.
BG Lyons was promoted to his current rank on August 23rd, 2009.

BG Lyons was born May 29th, 1962 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from Missouri Military Academy in 1980, received a Bachelors degree from Bellevue College and a Master of Strategic Studies from the US Army War College. BG Lyons and his spouse Amy (a LTC JAG officer with service in Operation Joint Guardian in Macedonia with the 41st RAOC and Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 67th ASG) have three children. Stepson Alex Baldwin (25) (also an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran with the 267th Maint Co and now a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard) and daughter-in-law Kara (22), Ben (18) (also a member of the Nebraska Army National Guard) and Sam (13). The Lyons family resides in Omaha, Nebraska.
