The man-year for this position is obligated to a Technician on military duty.&n= bsp; Selectee may be displaced upon return of the incumbent. Qualification Requirements:<= /b> General Experience: Experience, education, or training which demonstrates the candidate's ability to repair, overhaul, and rebuild heavy mobile systems and vehicles.= Must have the ability to interpret technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics and similar guides to m= ake repairs and modifications. Must be skilled in the use of diagnostic = and test equipment to determine mechanical problems. Specialized Experience: Must have 18 months of specialized experience in repairing, rebuilding, and overhauling systems and major components of heavy mobile equipment. Experience in diag= nosing malfunctions and determining remedy where complex relationships exists among different mechanical systems, requiring knowledge of units and systems with possible damage to equipment if incorrectly handled. Experience in = making mechanical repairs that required the use of precision measuring equipment a= nd common hand tools. Example of tools used are micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, wrenches and screwdrivers.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Experience in = using diagnostic and testing equipment such as digital multimeters and engine analyzers. Experience which demonstrates the ability to interpret techni= cal manuals, specifications and publications. Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience: EXPERIENC= E: Study successfully completed in a college, university, technical or vocational school may be substituted for experience at the rate of one year of study (30 semester hours or 20 classr= oom hours of instruction per week) for 6 months of experience. Courses must be directly related t= o the work of the position. Your appli= cation, (OF-612, SF-171, or resume), must show how your experience, awards, and training are applicable to the specialized experience requirements listed a= bove and the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s).

     1. Knowledge of and sk= ill in repairing, overhauling and rebuilding major assemblies and systems of heavy mobile equipment.

     2. Ability to troubles= hoot complex malfunctions requiring knowledge of the interaction of several subsystems.

     3. Skill in use of hand tools and precision measuring equipment.

     4. Skill in use of diagnostic and test equipment.

     5. Ability to interpret technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams and schematics to make repairs and modifications.

Summary of Duties: This position is located in the Vehicle Maintenance Section of the T= ransportation Branch. The purpose of this position is to maintain, repair and modify heavy duty vehicles and mobile equipment, including, but not limited to, materiel handling, fire fighting and base maintenance and refueling systems.

(1) Performs major repairs and maintenance on heavy mobile equipment and special purpose vehicles such as: fuel dispensing trucks, crash/structural fire equipment and pump trucks, la= rge runway snow removal vehicles, sweepers, bulldozers, mobile cranes, road gra= ders, heavy construction and earth moving vehicles, backhoes, power shovels, front end loaders and pans and trenchers. Inspects, repairs, overhauls and tests major systems including diesel, turbine gasoline, multi-fuel and other type= s of internal combustion engines, which may be turbo-charged or blower assisted, automatic or manual transmissions, including those with power take offs, cross-drive transmissions; heavy duty drive line systems and hydraulic, electric or pneumatic special systems and controls, pumping systems, turret= s, winches and four wheel steering systems.

(2) Diagnoses the cause of mecha= nical failures by means of visual and auditory checks, test equipment such as eng= ine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters and pressure gauges in order to determine the exact nature or extent of repairs or adjustments nec= essary to complete work. Removes and disassembles engines and major systems/ subsy= stems on fuel, hydraulic, air and oil systems. Makes repairs, overhauls or modifications in accordance with the proper procedures and specifications. Reassembles engines and makes adjustments, tests and reinstalls systems/subsystems in vehicles and equipment. Makes adjustments and repairs to front ends, suspensions and electrical systems.<= /span> Determines serviceability by operational driving test.<= /span>

(3) Performs body repair and cor= rosion control, refinishes and repaints surfaces as required. Repairs and/or repla= ces body parts, locks, glass, etc and determines if additional repairs are required. Repairs may be accomplished by using welding equipment, power too= ls, hand tools and other specialized equipment. Cleans, tests and repairs radiators/oil coolers and associated parts. Replaces or repa= irs tires, tubes and balances wheels.

4) Prepares, maintains and submi= ts applicable maintenance work orders for man-hour and data collection account= ing, to include completing forms to reflect work performed or delayed and parts = and maintenance required.

(5) Assists in review and updati= ng maintenance technical orders, shop operating instructions, commercial publications, MAJCOM and local publications, as well as other pertinent directives.

(6) Assists in establishing and maintaining adequate branch and special stock support levels and appropriate shop support equipment and tools. Uses and maintains all appropriate shop equipment. Researches and assists in requisitioning materials, parts and equipment necessary to perform the vehicle maintenance/management mission.<= o:p>

(7) Participates as OJT Instruct= or in the vehicle maintenance area. Conducts instructional cl= asses on methods and procedures of operation and maintenance concerning all aspec= ts of vehicles and assigned shop maintenance support equipment. Evaluat= es effectiveness of instruction, maintains individual and section training and= qualification records.

(8) Assists in conducting the lo= cal occupational safety and health training program, to include compliance with directives and procedures for proper disposal of hazardous waste products within the functional area.

(9) Operates general and special purpose vehicles and base maintenance and materials handling equipment, as required to support the unit mission.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
1. Military Technicians are ineligibl= e for enlistment, retention, and student loan repayment bonuses. Acceptance of a Technician positio= n will terminate these incentives.

2. Technicians are paid through direct deposit/electronic funds transfer.

3. Male candidates born after 31 Dece= mber 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.

4. Military Technicians in the except= ed service will wear the appropriate military uniform while performing as a technician.
